Neil Angus MP, State Member for Forest Hill, today encouraged eligible sports and active recreation clubs in his State seat, the Forest Hill electorate, to apply for VicHealth Active Club Grants of between $3000 to $10,000, aimed at increasing female participation and participation in social and modified forms of sport.
“As a former VicHealth Board Member, I would encourage all local eligible clubs to apply for this round of VicHealth Active Club Grants before they close on Friday 10 March,” Mr Angus said.
“The program is a great opportunity for Forest Hill clubs to promote their activities to the community more broadly and in doing so, encourage more people to experience the benefits of being more active, both socially and physically”, Mr Angus said.
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said VicHealth Active Club Grants are an important part of VicHealth’s strategy to have 300,000 more Victorians taking part in regular physical activity by 2023.
Ms Rechter said female participation in sport is still lower than male involvement, and due to many factors, including a lack of time and confidence, many women and girls find it hard to fit the recommended 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity into their week.
“Our research shows that every step really does count, and anything that gets you moving is beneficial,” said Ms Rechter.
Social sport includes more flexible, fun and less-structured opportunities with a focus on social interaction, and less emphasis on performance, results and competition – they might be modified to increase opportunities across age, disability, skill level, fitness level, lifestyle, or location.
Football Federation Victoria’s Summer Sevens and Bowls Victoria’s Jack Attack are examples of sport programs catering for different audiences.
